ICF Consulting to Help New York State Promote High-Quality, Energy-Efficient Lighting

FAIRFAX, VA, February 14, 2000 - ICF Consulting was awarded a $3.5 million contract to promote high-quality, energy-efficient commercial lighting by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) under the New York Energy $martSM Program. This market transformation program will target lighting suppliers, electrical contractors, and retailers that remodel and renovate small- and medium-sized commercial spaces. The program will be implemented over a period of about two years.

New York State's almost 800 million square feet of small- and medium-sized commercial space uses 6,200 gigawatt hours of electricity a year for lighting. Recent development of standardized guidelines on quality lighting design practices will increase acceptance of energy-efficient design practices in these markets. ICF Consulting will facilitate consumer awareness of the benefits of improving lighting, such as operational savings, increased functionality, visual appeal, comfort, productivity, safety, and retail sales.

"We plan to have a lasting impact on the availability, promotion, sales, and implementation of high-quality, energy-efficient lighting," said James Stimmel, ICF Consulting Senior Vice President. "This effort will help build a sustainable market infrastructure to deliver high-quality, energy-efficient lighting to commercial customers."

ICF Consulting addresses energy efficiency in buildings, market transformation issues, and lighting analysis with its team of experts in commercial real estate, retailing, training, lighting design, and development and communication of outreach tools for market transformation programs.

NYSERDA, a public benefit corporation, supports projects in New York State to develop and promote technologies that save energy and reduce emissions. Funding for NYSERDA's New York Energy $mart program comes from a Systems Benefits Charge established by the New York State Public Service Commission on five of the State's investor-owned utilities to ensure that important R&D and energy efficiency programs continue during the utilities' transition to competition.
