ICF Consulting Awarded 5-Year, $5 Million Underground Storage Tank Contract

FAIRFAX, VA, December 15, 1999 - ICF Consulting has been awarded a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) contract to address issues relating to the prevention and cleanup of groundwater contamination due to leaks from underground storage tanks (USTs). Under this contract, ICF Consulting will provide services ranging from cost and engineering analysis to training and meeting facilitation for EPA, states, and tank owners and operators. With a potential contract value of $5.3 million, ICF Consulting will provide these services for two years with three, one-year options.

"ICF Consulting has supported EPA's UST program since its inception 15 years ago," said ICF Consulting Executive Vice President Peter Linquiti. "What's more, this is our third prime contract win at the EPA this year. We are delighted at the Agency's continued confidence in us."

Protecting groundwater from contamination by petroleum products and other materials stored in underground tanks is critical to protecting the health of approximately 100 million Americans who rely on groundwater for drinking water. A major milestone in the effort to protect groundwater from UST releases was reached in December 1998 when all UST systems were required to be upgraded to meet federal standards. However, many challenges still remain, such as achieving compliance with the upgrade requirements, encouraging redevelopment of contaminated sites, ensuring the availability of funding for site cleanup, and implementing improved tank system technologies. In addition, numerous incidents of groundwater contamination with the gasoline additive methyl tertiary-butyl ether (MTBE) have put USTs in the center of the current debate over how to achieve both water and air quality protection. "ICF Consulting is excited about the prospect of helping EPA address complex environmental issues like MTBE contamination of groundwater," said Linquiti.
