Project Also to Include Development of Environmental
Policies
FAIRFAX, VA, September 5, 2000 - ICF
Consulting announced today that it has been awarded a contract
by the Government of The Bahamas to support the development
of the country's environmental laws and regulations and
the establishment of a national ministry for the environment.
The contract is funded by an Inter-American Development
Bank technical cooperation grant.
"The project addresses several challenges that other
Caribbean countries also face. Much of The Bahamas' development
is based on tourism and therefore relies on maintaining
pristine environmental conditions and the country's natural
beauty and diversity," said Walter Palmer, ICF Consulting
Project Manager. "This project enables ICF Consulting to
apply its extensive international experience in strengthening
environmental policies and institutions while supporting
expanded economic development."
ICF Consulting will be working for The Bahamas Environment,
Science, and Technology (BEST) Commission, in the Office
of the Prime Minister, under the direction of The Bahamas
Ambassador for the Environment, the Honorable Earl Deveaux,
and BEST Undersecretary and Project Coordinator, Dr. Donald
Cooper. Key project components include establishing environmental
impact assessment, coastal zone management, environmental
monitoring, biodiversity conservation, emergency management,
and public awareness programs.
Widely recognized for its expertise in environmental policy
analysis and management, ICF Consulting also consults to
clients on the development of regional economic strategy.
It recently has advised countries in Europe and Latin America
on expanding their national tourism industries.
