Researchers Develop Pharmacokinetic Methods to Determine
Permissible Exposure Limits and Dose-Response Assessments
FAIRFAX, VA, August 2, 2000 - ICF Consulting announced
today that two of its environmental scientists have received
awards from the Society of Toxicology's Risk Assessment Specialty
Section for outstanding presentations in risk assessment.
The awards were for work presented at the Society's 39th annual
meeting, which recently was held in Philadelphia. The presentations
were based on work that ICF Consulting recently completed
to develop better methods for determining permissible exposure
limits (PELs) and dose-response assessments for toxic chemicals.
Both projects used pharmacokinetic methods, which estimate
the disposition of toxic chemicals through the human body.
The first award was for a presentation titled, "A Family
Approach for Estimating Reference Doses/Concentrations for
a Series of Related Organic Chemicals." The presentation
described the work that Justin Teegaurden, Ph.D., an ICF Consulting
toxicologist, performed to develop pharmacokinetic methods
to streamline development of reference concentrations and
reference doses for compounds that are sequential metabolites
of common precursor compounds. Tip Tyler, Ph.D., of Union
Carbide Corporation, Hugh Barton, Ph.D., of the U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency, and Mel Andersen, Ph.D., of Colorado State
University, also contributed to the study. Dr. Barton and
Dr. Andersen are formerly of ICF Consulting.
The second award was presented to ICF Consulting's Ramesh
Sarangapani, Ph.D., for his presentation titled, "Developing
a Pharmocokinetic Model for a Biologically Based Dose-Response
Assessment for Dimethyl Sulfate." Dr. Teeguarden and
Matt Bogdanffy, Ph.D., of Dupont Haskell Laboratory in Newark,
Delaware, also contributed to the study described in this
presentation. This work is aimed at improving the scientific
basis for assessing the health risks of dimethyl sulfate.
"ICF Consulting is proud to have two of its environmental
scientists recognized by their peers for the contributions
they have made toward building an environmentally sustainable
future," said Peter Linquiti, ICF Consulting executive
vice president. "Refining the methods for determining
PELs and dose-response assessments is a vital contribution
to progress in environmental toxicology and in environmental
management as a whole."
Dr. Sarangapani and Dr. Teeguarden are based in ICF Consulting's
office in Research
Triangle Park, North Carolina.
