LONDON, UK, October 8, 2003
Earlier this year, The Carbon Trust of the UK appointed ICF
Consulting to design its Pilot Carbon Management Programme
for UK-based companies. The programme, which has just been
launched by the Carbon Trust, is a pioneering initiative to
provide guidance and technical support to UK entities seeking
to integrate the effective management of greenhouse gas (GHG)
emissions into their core business or operational strategies.
The programme is expected to be of particular importance given
the large number of entities in the UK that will be required
to act to reduce their contribution to global
warming, given regulatory, customer, investor or other
stakeholder requirements.
In addition to evaluating the business case for the programme
for both for the Carbon Trust and end users, ICF Consulting
assisted with the development of the overall approach to
carbon management. This area of assistance included developing
analytical tools and methodologies, publicity, and technical
guidance documentation. The Carbon Trust's Carbon Management
Programme is based on the lessons learned from the best
practices of UK and international companies that have adopted
a proactive stance on Carbon Management. In addition to
providing support and guidance to identify and appraise
options for carbon abatement, the Programme provides detailed
guidance to assist companies to appraise the business case
for carbon management and implement the necessary organisational
changes to promote a long-term and sustained commitment
to this important issue.
"We were honoured to be involved in such a pioneering
initiative that can provide real practical and commercially-relevant
support for UK-based companies in the face of increasing
requirements for the minimisation of GHG emissions"
says Abyd Karmali, ICF Consulting's Director of European
Climate Change Services. " In particular, the guidance
tools go further than those already in existence by enabling
companies to begin to understand and quantify the commercial
implications of forthcoming GHG policies, such as the EU
Emissions Trading Scheme, for their businesses."
Mr. Karmali continued, "We were in a privileged position
to be able to synthesise the lessons learned through our
own 15 years' of carbon management advisory experience and
the Carbon Trust's own activities with a range of UK entities
taking a proactive stance on this issue. We believe that
the Carbon Trust's Carbon Management Programme will be of
great value to a large number of UK entities and will play
a valuable contribution in helping the UK Government to
meet its national objectives to reduce GHG emissions."
The Carbon Trust's Carbon Management Programme will be tested
over the next 18 months through a pilot study involving
a number of leading UK companies.
