Organizations today are confronted with a fast-paced, competitive global economy that is marked by constant change. Organizations are finding that they need well-developed, integrated personnel practices (such as selection and performance appraisal) to ensure that the central component of their success—their employees—are maintaining a high level of productivity in these times of change. Essential to every one of these personnel practices is a sound job analysis or competency modeling effort. ICF International specializes in conducting customized and well-integrated job analyses and competency models for clients of all different sizes and complexities.
What is a competency?
A competency is a description of the functional capability to perform a work requirement. A competency is comprised of a combination of knowledge, skills, abilities, and other individual characteristics (often called KSAOs; including but not limited to motives, personality traits, self-concepts, attitudes, beliefs, values, and interests) that can be reliably measured and that can be shown to differentiate performance.
What is competency modeling and job analysis used for?
Competency modeling and job analysis are often implemented to serve as the foundation for a particular human resources practice, or a number of HR practices. The image below shows a sampling of some of the many practices influenced by competency modeling and job analysis.
