The Power Business in a Challenging World

AES Perspective

Energy and Environment Breakfast Series
Categorized Under: Energy

The electric power business entails risk in every country—from stability and creditworthiness and the structure of a country's power sector to its exchange rates and "nontechnical" (theft) losses on the grid. Regulatory risk and uncertainty loom high in some jurisdictions.

How does a company like AES—arguably the most geographically diverse electric power company in the world and one of the largest global players—decide whether or not to enter a country and, once there, whether to stay or to expand? How does the company trade off risks related to regulators such as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) against exchange rate uncertainty in Brazil? Come hear AES's retiring CEO, Paul Hanrahan, discuss how successful firms balance risks against potential rewards and how the United States stacks up against other countries.
