Frequent deployments and decreased opportunities for institutional learning have placed a premium on alternative forms of Army leader development. Exemplars in the form of stories have received increased attention for their contribution to learning and development. This article describes an evaluation of leadership exemplars for use in promoting Army leader development. Content and context issues are explored for their effects on the perceived effectiveness of military and civilian leadership stories. Gender and timeframe of the exemplar were not found to significantly affect perceptions of the value of the exemplar for development.
