New modeling shows that the United States might need to increase renewables to at least 85% of energy generation to reach net zero. While renewable energy generation would need to increase significantly over time, the sun isn’t always shining and the wind isn’t always blowing. To create a balanced, reliable supply of electricity, energy storage from sources such as batteries would also need to rise.
