Independent Verification and Validation for Aviation System Safety

Categorized Under: Aviation, IT Solutions, Scientific + Engineering Analysis, Transportation

ICF International has supported the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) System Approach to Safety Oversight (SASO) Program Office since its inception by providing independent verification and validation (IV&V) activities associated with business process reengineering and change management plans. ICF has also provided risk management and quality review assessments for the SASO Program, which is developing and implementing a comprehensive, integrated system safety approach to the oversight of all aviation entities. The Flight Standards’ Safety Assurance System (SAS)—currently under development by the SASO Program Office—is the combination of people, processes, and technology that will be FAA's safety assurance capability.

This work has aligned with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards and recommended practices regarding implementing Safety Management Systems (SMS) for civil aviation authorities in its member states. As FAA prepares to implement the SAS, it will be a step toward meeting a number of ICAO's SMS standards and recommended practices.
