ICF supports the National Expenditure Survey (NES) for the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), a large, complex survey effort involving field, mail,
Internet, and telephone survey data collection. Data collection occurs monthly for one year, and involves a multimode, multiple contact design. The survey data are used to estimate the economic importance of saltwater recreational fishing to the United States. The NES meets the NMFS
mandate to examine and report the economic impacts of the policies it
implements.
ICF supports several NMFS projects by collecting accurate data on coastal
fishing stocks, allocation of fishery resources, and the impact of
regulations on anglers and the sport-fishing industry. NMFS supports national, regional, and local efforts to maintain healthy
and sustainable fisheries while addressing the economic and recreational
needs of the fishing community. Coastal recreational fishing makes up a
significant portion of the total catches of many species of fish (in
2009, recreational anglers caught 391 million fish).
