ICF International is providing support to the National Park Service (NPS) in developing guidance and a screening tool to help characterize park vulnerability to climate change. The guidance and tool will help address climate risk and adaptation of NPS facilities.
First, ICF developed a concise document—“Interim Guidance on Climate Change Risk Screening, Assessment, and Management for NPS Facilities”—which presents a flexible and structured general framework. It describes key steps that should be taken to screen, assess, and manage facilities-oriented climate risks.
Then, ICF used this guidance as the conceptual foundation in developing a high-level risk screening tool. The tool, which enables screening of facilities in parks across the United States, contains modules for identifying critical facilities and assessing their exposure, sensitivity, and adaptive capacity. NPS will use the tool to identify coastal parks with the greatest vulnerability to sea level rise.
