ICF provided technical assistance in sustainability planning to the USAID grantee HealthPartners Uganda for its Collaborations Project, which focuses on the creation of health cooperatives to improve access to affordable health care. The core components of this technical assistance included:
- Conducting a training of trainers (TOT) for HealthPartners Collaborations Program staff in the Sustainability Framework and approach
- Providing direct in-country mentoring and technical support to the HealthPartners trainees in conducting a Sustainability Planning Workshop with potential health cooperative stakeholders
ICF also developed tailored training materials both for the TOT with the project staff and for the sustainability planning workshops to be held with community health cooperatives. The Facilitators Manual developed by ICF is designed for use at the community level and breaks down the complex concepts of sustainability planning into simpler terms. Based on key adult learning principles, the curriculum includes numerous participatory exercises and opportunities for dialogue and practical learning.
Following the TOT, HealthPartners trainees were able to apply the skills and knowledge and lead the facilitation of the Sustainability Planning Workshop. ICF shared individual feedback and guidance with the trainees on a daily basis, documenting all key recommendations and allowing trainees to reference specific comments prior to replicating this training with other health cooperative groups.
