State of the Union, State of the Funding - What Does the Administration Propose?

While President Obama did not mention "brownfields" specifically in his State of the Union Address on January 27th, he certainly called for Congress to consider a number of recommendations that could have important effects on community revitalization efforts. Specifically, he proposed to take $30 billion in TARP repayments and use it to "help community banks give small businesses the credit they need"—which clearly could have an important impact on local revitalization efforts, including those on brownfield sites. Similarly, he called on Congress to enact a new jobs bill which—if combined with ideas on sustainable development and infill reuse—could encourage a greater level of brownfield activity.
