How safe and secure are our energy facilities? Our nation's economic and physical security depends heavily on the products and services supplied by the energy sector, and our speaker, Mr. Bryan, will address the government's efforts to secure those facilities. In particular, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) leads the federal government efforts to advance the energy security of the United States, and to ensure a secure, reliable and resilient energy infrastructure. Mr. Bryan will discuss how DOE works closely with its sector security partners in federal, state, local, and tribal governments, and most importantly, in close cooperation with private owners and operators of energy assets, who represent more than 85 percent of the sector. We hear about security issues relating to energy assets in other countries on a regular basis—come learn more about what we are doing here, as Mr. Bryan will focus on DOE's strategy for energy asset security.
Mr. Bryan is the deputy assistant secretary for Infrastructure Security and Energy Restoration in the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Office of Electricity Delivery and Energy Reliability. The office of Infrastructure Security and Energy Restoration works with the Department of Homeland Security and other agencies to enhance the security and resiliency of the nation’s critical energy infrastructure and facilitate the reconstruction and recovery of damaged or disrupted energy systems.
As a career senior executive, Mr. Bryan oversees the collection, analysis, and dissemination of vital information to all involved in energy response and restoration efforts. In addition, Mr. Bryan serves to keep the office in the essential coordinating role for the energy sector during a disruption. He also leads the office in support of the energy sector asset owners in the development and implementation of infrastructure protection strategies and methodologies.
Before assuming his current position, Mr. Bryan served as the Director for Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) in the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Policy at the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD). He led all CIP and Defense Industrial Base (DIB) related activities within this office and advised key DoD leadership on the relevance of current CIP and DIB capabilities, methodologies, and technologies in support of military and civil homeland defense efforts deemed essential to national security.
