Protecting Children from Environmental Risks at Home and in Child Care Settings

The ICF Early Education Institute™ is pleased to
present a free Webinar series discussing hot topics and issues in the field of early care and education.

Representatives from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will share valuable information about how the early child care community can create healthy and safe settings by reducing various environmental risks in the child care setting and family homes that threaten children's health.

Presenters

  • Francine St. Denis, Ph.D., an environmental scientist with the EPA's Office of Ground Water and Drinking Water, will discuss the 3Ts for reducing lead in drinking water in schools and child care facilities.

  • Darlene Watford, an environmental scientist with the EPA's Office of Prevention, Pesticides, and Toxic Substances, will discuss general lead poisoning prevention measures and EPA's new lead rule (issued March 31, 2008) aimed at protecting children from lead-based paint hazards during renovations.

  • Sherry Glick, a national pesticides and schools coordinator with the EPA's Office of Pesticide Programs, Biopesticides and Pollution Prevention Division Environmental Stewardship Branch, and Darlene Dinkins, a communications specialist with the EPA's Office of Pesticide Programs, Communication Services Branch, will discuss how to effectively control pests and reduce exposure to chemical pesticides by using Integrated Pest Management (IPM).

  • Kathy Seikel, Director of Communications with the Office of Children’s Health and Environmental Education, will discuss how children may be more vulnerable to environmental exposures than adults.

  • Mike Holloway, with the EPA's Office of radiation and Indoor Air, will provide a brief overview about the health impacts of children's exposure to secondhand smoke and environmental asthma triggers along with useful information, tools, and resources to help families avoid problems.
