Brownfields Revitalization

For more than 20 years, ICF International has been at the forefront of developing cutting-edge solutions to problems in the arenas of environmental, community, and economic development. Successful brownfield revitalization on any significant scale requires crosscutting expertise—environmental, financial, legal, training, and social service. ICF helps private, public, and nonprofit clients with all aspects of their brownfield redevelopment projects.

Underused or abandoned industrial facilities are a national concern. Confronting the environmental and economic issues affecting site reuse requires a deliberate, multi-dimensional approach that often does not neatly fit with the rules and procedures of federal, state, or local economic development or environmental programs. Financing is still a key barrier to brownfield reuse. Site assessment and cleanup require financial resources that many firms lack and find difficult to secure.

Yet in spite of the barriers, communities all across the country have discovered that brownfield reuse opportunities are real. To date, more than 70,000 sites have successfully completed state voluntary cleanup programs, and thousands of diverse projects have been documented, showing how they have been carried out in a sustainable way that makes both economic and environmental sense and that builds on the specific sites’ competitive advantage. Such success stories suggest that liabilities can be worked out, that financing can be secured, and that cleanup can be accomplished—in short, that brownfield redevelopment can be achieved.

The goal of this website is to provide a common meeting point for the range of interests that converge on a brownfield situation, and to lay out ideas that will encourage communication, sharing, and integration. Over time, this site will consider various topics and issues. Learn more about ICF International's brownfields:
