To Provide Technical Support for the Regulation of Antimicrobial Pesticides
Fairfax, Virginia, October 16, 2006 -
ICF International (Nasdaq: ICFI) announced today that it was awarded the Technical Support for Toxicology, Chemistry, Human Exposure, Environmental Fate, and Ecological Assessments of Pesticides contract, a new five-year, US$8.4 million engagement with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Office of Pesticide Programs (OPP), Antimicrobials Division (AD). The purpose of the contract is to help EPA protect public health and the environment through the registration, re-registration, and other regulation of antimicrobial pesticides.
"We are excited by this opportunity to work with OPP on this critical national initiative, demonstrating our commitment to safeguarding people and sustaining the environment," says Baxter Jones, a senior vice president at ICF and expert in environmental sciences. "This contract, along with more than 20 other mission support contracts on which ICF works for EPA, confirms the breadth of our technical and regulatory capabilities."
The contract encompasses all activities related to the regulation of antimicrobial pesticides, including protecting human health and the environment and assuring the effectiveness of these products as pesticides. ICF’s responsibilities extend to all antimicrobial products, including disinfectants, slimicides, algaecides, sanitizers, and products with antimicrobial properties.
Nearly 300 different antimicrobials are registered for use as active ingredients in well over 5,000 antimicrobial products. ICF’s team will support EPA in reviewing, analyzing, and synthesizing the product and residue chemistry, toxicology, human exposure, environmental fate, and ecological effects data on these products, in order to help EPA characterize the potential human health and environmental risks associated with them.
