  • Why is an advanced battery industry important to the U.S., and what will be the benefits?
  • To what extent (and by when) can we mitigate greenhouse gases, create jobs, and develop large scale manufacturing that will benefit the country as a whole?

In August 2009, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) awarded nearly $1.5 billion in manufacturing grants for advanced batteries and components, and Johnson Controls received the largest single award for the lithium-ion battery—$299.2 million. Michael Andrew of Johnson Controls will discuss these points and provide an overview of both the electric drive vehicle technology spectrum and advanced battery technology, as well as Johnson Controls market forecast and plans to have its plant in Holland, Mich., running by mid-2010.

Come and hear about this transformational technology and what replacing octane with electrons can do to benefit your pocketbook, shift the energy equation, and enhance your peace of mind.

Presenter

Michael AndrewWith Johnson Controls, Michael Andrew is responsible for communications on the benefits of alternative transportation sources, with a focus on hybrid technology. He has global responsibility to work with the public sector to move hybrid technology and awareness into the marketplace. As part of his responsibilities, Mike is responsible for the U.S. Advanced Battery Consortium (USABC) and DOE technology development contracts. From 2007 to 2007, Mike was the program manager for Johnson Controls’ lithium-ion battery development contracts with the USABC.

Recently, Mike was co-architect of Johnson Controls proposal to the DOE for Advanced Battery Manufacturing, which received the largest single grant. Since joining the company in 1979, Mike has worked on several advanced battery programs, including electric vehicle development for the DOE and bipolar development for the U.S. Air Force and CIA. He has served as Project Manager for five U.S. Government-sponsored programs.

Mike was previously the design manager for Johnson Controls Inspira® lead-acid battery, an ultra high-power design that achieved new benchmarks in specific power and power density for lead-acid batteries. He has presented testimony to federal and state agencies concerning the technology available to electrify light vehicle drivetrains, and its potential impact on our economy, energy demand, and environment.
